I took the decision of buying a house about two years ago. Said and done...the house is on the outskirts of Bucharest, a 30 minute drive to the office, a 10 minute drive to the nearest shopping center. So, it is all good from this point of view.
But did I made a good call about investing in a home for 25 years - yes, I got a loan from the bank? Some say yes, some say I did a silly thing, putting myself in that position that I have to stay there for a good part of my life.
Those who said NO, have a place rented in which they do the same things I do in my home. I stayed in a rented place for quite a while, but I felt that is time to move on. I see this action of mine a step forward into my life, not a step-back regarding the money I spent.
Enough about me, because I am happy with my decision, with my girlfriend, with my backyard and my dog and with my monthly payments for the house :).
Taking in consideration some other articles I have read about rent vs buy I can say that half of renters in Europe won`t buy a home ever.
Let me criticise that buying a home is the biggest money decision factor in our life... I say no to that loud and clear. We don`t have to work and earn money just to buy a house. We have a lot of other things to think about. That is the biggest mistake of our lives. Thinking that we can`t afford a home of our own being 30 years old.
So, buy a home, don`t just pay the lady for every month you stay in her room or 2 bedroom apartment.
Even though half the renters say that they are OK with paying the rent, they admit that if they have the chance to buy a home, they would do it. So it is just a matter of time until everyone of us will own a home. It is a good chance to have a property, to have something of your own that you could rent it out to another person that enters the working class. I see it as a financial smart decision and a personal success.
Again, even though you are very happy to get the keys of your home, the hard part is yet to come.
You have to take in consideration a little bit more than the price of the house, you have to have your finance in order to get your dream home, to get your kitchen filled with everything you need to operate it, to get your bedroom done so you can shave a good sleep.
It can be hell, but that good kind of hell :)
If you rent a place, you might think that is cheaper, but for how long. Unless you are a person that moves a lot, you just got to put your shit together and buy a home.
