Romania has it`s own soul-based party on the 30th of November. It is happening under St. Andrew day and it`s a riot.
St. Andrew is known to be the guardian of the Romanian people and the man who taught us the Christianity way.
It involves garlic, a lot of garlic, bread, holly water, candles, the holly cross, onions, wheat, and other evil combinations of all the above!
There are a lot of legends around this "black-holiday" in which we all can be attacked by ghosts and dead people spirits, and all of them are native.
Until now, a lot of people were doing various magical-rituals just to be safe. Them, the house and the animals near them( in our days we can translate this into pets :). A little bit late, on this day we were able some-how to communicate with the spirits from the world of death.
Another cute thing to know about our grand-grand-grand fathers :))....they were sorcerers :))
All the single ladies( singles and virgins - it`s a must) could find out something about the one and only, prince-charming. How? With only one basil yarn placed under the pillow, the virgin ones will dream the face of prince charming. Pretty tricky if you asked me?:))
Another way to see if prince charming is really prince charming or some old and ugly guy was to walk at night, blind-folded towards the fence and choose one of the fences wooden piece and tie the yarn of basil to it. Yeah, I know what you are thinking...but hold on to your Ipad`s..the next morning, the virgin would walk outside and see if the wooden piece of the fence is smooth and soft or it`s nasty and dirty. Can you figure out the outcome? Smooth and soft means that prince charming is ...let me choose Tom Hardy for you, and Jerry Stiller on the other side - Jerry, you rocked in The King of Queens.
Let me do the transition just to get your mind from the virgins, so....women, on the St. Andrew day, women will turn upside down all the pots and the cups to not be assaulted in the night by the undead or the werewolves. The bread is also used as a weapon. You take some bread and you throw it in front of the house and the werewolves eat it outside and leave your premises without harming you.
Garlic and candle combo is used also to keep away the bad spirits, you just need to hang some garlic on the front door and have a candle lit.
And if you do all that magic above you are safe, but your dog, cat, fish, rabbit, parrot, snake, lizard or whatever animal you keep in your house is not and he is in great danger!! Unless you sneak some holly water in the bowl of water.
If all the instructions above are followed you will survive this "holiday"!!
But wait, there is more! This is going out for all the weather people out-there, you can now predict weather for agriculture, 12 months ahead if you are in Romania, if you have a house with an attic and 12 onions.
Here it goes, you take 12 onions and put them in the attic on St. Andrew and leave the onions until Christmas Eve. You give each onion one month of the year. If it`s gone bad, that month will be a bad month for agriculture and a good one if the onion survived.
And, for all of this we get the day off from office. We need it, just to get us prepared for the attack from the other-side :)
